The Rushden Temperance Band - 1962/3.

The Rushden Temperance Band photographed at the time when they first took up 'residency' at the the 'Windmill' club. This photograph was, kindly, sent to me by David Howard whose father, John Howard, is the 'bespectacled' Euphonium player - his partner in crime is Joe Pothecary, the trombone player on the far right of the picture is Ron Benning and the 2nd cornet from the left (standing) is Barry Osbourne. I am promised more names and possibly more photographs - watch this space...!!!!

Audio:
Rushden Temperance Band, c. 1962 - 'Midland Bandstand' - broadcast on BBC Radio 4, "the Home Service" for the Midlands and East Anglia.

John Howard was conducting and the band played a full programme. The excerpt here is the 'March' movement from the Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst.

The recording (made using 'reel-to-reel' and a microphone in front of the radio - 1960's 'high-tech'!) and photograph was sent to me by David Howard who wrote:

"My father, John Howard, was a member of the band for most of the 1960s, taking over as conductor from Ernie Denton.  If you would find it useful, I'm sure he could add to your archive.  In addition to the achievements of the band, he remembers many of the players from that era.  We also have some old tapes of BBC Midland Bandstand that I have transferred onto CD. The quality is not too bad and they do make interesting listening."

Indeed it does - and makes a welcome addition to the archive - thank you David.
