Rushden Temperance Band - Band Practice 1961 style!

This picture was one of four sent to the Band by David Gomm - a cornet player with the 'Temps' in the early 60's. David now lives in South London.

Those pictured are as follows:

Conductor: Bill Scholes.

Horns: John and Gordon Robinson, Percy Long.

Euphoniums: Willie Frazer, Dennis Denton.

Baritones: John Howard, Sonny Stanley.

BBb Basses: Jack Scholes, Tommy Oram.

Cornets (in view): Albert Batts, Harry Hartwell, David Gomm.

In addition, David writes:

'This photograph was taken in the 'Temps' practice room - which was above A Sanders Builders in Rectory Road.

John and Gordon Robinson were brothers, who (I believe) came to Rushden to play with the John Whites Footwear Band *. Willie Frazer was also a member of John Whites and after leaving the 'Temps' joined the Scots Guards Band. Dennis Denton was Ernie Denton's brother - Ernie was principal cornet at this time. And Jack Scholes was Bill's brother - Jack used to bring his dog to rehearsals with him - the dog always used to sit under his chair.'

* The John Whites Footwear Band (based in Rushden) seems only to have been active in the 1950's.

Note the two photographs on the back wall. Closer inspection reveals that they are the 'group' photo's of the band taken in 1904 and 1951, which also feature on our 'archive photo's' page.
