Rushden Windmill Band - 2 pictures from the 1980's.

This photograph accompanied a newspaper article dated 17th May 1984. Ian MacDonald is on the extreme left and M.D. Dave Goswell is holding the shield. Also featured are Jane Nichols, Ian Bates, Mark Limbert and Martin Dummer.

The text that went with the article read:
High note for Ian.

RUSHDEN cornet player Ian MacDonald proved to be top of the pops at a brass band contest staged at Clacton-on-Sea. Ian, of Brookfield Road, took first place in the soprano section with a tune called Dimensions, accompanied by his colleagues in the Windmill Band.

He beat eight other players to scoop the top prize - and went home with a cup for his trouble. but the band itself did not leave the seaside resort empty handed either, winning two titles at the festival. The 30 strong outfit's rendition of a tune called Symarain (..or perhaps 'Simoraine'!!) sruck the right note with the judges and won first place in the in march class.

And the Rushden Windmill's collective performance of Dimensions bettered nine others to scoop the top prize in the second section, for the bands in the southern area of the country.

Along with the cup, the group won £150 - which will go towards paying the £170 coach bill.

Clearly, the reporter had no idea of what he was actually reporting on, but as they say...any publicity is good publicity!!! Now let's move on a couple of years...

This picture went with a newspaper article dated 10th April 1986. Amongst those featured are: (Standing) Dave Goswell, M.D. (Extreme left), and the 'ever-present' Jane Nichols, Ian Bates and Mark Limbert and sitting on the left is Martin Dummer.

The text that went with this article read:

PRIZES AT THE DOUBLE!

RUSHDEN'S Windmill Band has collected two top prizes in brass band contests this year. A recent county contest win and a second placing at the Easter Pontins Brass Band Festival have boosted hopes for the Midlands Area Championships later this month in Northampton.

Rushden won the shield for first place in their section in the county association contest at Corby - with Towcester Studio Band second, the Rushden band are pictured with their shield.

The roles were reversed at the Hemsby holiday camp contest at Easter......in the Pontins regional finals. Both bands now qualify for the grand finals at Prestatyn, North Wales, in October.

Later this month the two will meet again at the Midlands Area Championships at Spinney Hill, Northampton, where the top prize will be a place at the national brass band finals later this year.
