WMBBA Competition
20th November 2011

This was a very early start for most of the band apart from those that overslept!!!!

Arrangements were made to use Pershore Town Hall at 8.15am, yes thats what l said 8.15AM!!! which meant leaving Rushden around 6.30am at the latest, some took the well steamed up mini bus and the rest went by their own steam.!!!

For those that did make it on time arrived only to find that the Town Hall was all locked up and not a soul around, finally at around 8.45 when most of the members finally made it, it was decided to proceed to the venue without the rehearsal, it was later found out that there had been some breakdown in communication with the council.

The WMBBA competition was at Pershore High School, this was a new venue and despite a few glitches things seemed to run smoothly.

At 10.00am we were drawn 4th out of 8 to play, so off to the changing area we went to prepare, sadly there wasn't a warmup area so John decided a nice warmup outside in 8 degrees should do the trick!!!

The band played very well and many great comments were recieved and after a very tense wait we were awarded a respectable 3rd place and the 'Ralph Tarn Memorial Trophy' went to the Euphonium section.

John Berryman's comments were as follows....

Part I
A touch careful tempo wise but uts all quite accurate. Well done cornet. Bars 2, 4, 6 adter D need to be more incisive with accents. Generally a tidy movement just lacking that bit of sparkle.

Part II
A nice start from horns. Horn does well with the solo. Now it suddenly takes off tempo wise, a bit too much l feel. Lovely Euph solo, well shaped. Lovely balanced cornets at M. Well played Sop and beautiful final bars.

Part III
A good tempo and its all quite neat. Everything not always heard clearly at times but its all nicely shaped generally. Well done from T and alarg. Good to open from U the Sop. figure a bit messy but a great top note, the same good playing up to the end.

John Berryman
Considering the long day and mishaps of the morning it was a great result and a good base for us to work on next weeks competition.
The only negative of the day was that James was going to kill John Berryman because he creased his O' Level certificate!!!!
